Recently in one of our project we faced a very unique problem which I couldn’t figured out while development. We were told to design a search engine which could filter out obscene word from search. Somehow we were able to provide them a temporary solution. We basically provide them a huge list of obscene words and before hitting database for search result we process the search term for obscenity. But I don't think the problem ends here.

Problem:
Do you see a problem here? Is there any dictionary available which gives us obscene words list? A simple search can’t figure out that user is searching for “sensex” or “lovesex” or  “sex”. So we need to be more accurate that the word searched is really an obscene word before blocking our search results.

Solution:
If there is any dictionary available then we can write an API to make it more usable. Everyone is not much familiar with regular expression. We can refine our obscenity check using regular expression. 

Expansion of Idea:
This is not only useful for millions of website but also for various other purpose :
1. You can integrate your service with movie subtitle generator and replace all obscene word from there subtitles.
2. Just one step ahead, how about recognizing the obscene word using some “audio to text” tool and processing it through your database and introduce a peep sound in place of any obscene word.
3. A tool to check if there is any obscene word in a doc, pdf, odt  etc or not.
4. Well the google safe search is not that affective and we can’t customize it (this is one issue which we will discuss soon).We can make a extension in firefox which will stop all kinds of obscene word search result.
